CMU Test Reports

ASTM International, originally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is one of the largest standards development organizations in the world. Standards include test methods, specification guides, recommended practices, and terminology.

ASTM C90 (Standard Specification for Loadbearing Concrete Masonry Units) is a specification for materials and requirements in the manufacture of concrete masonry units. ASTM C90 contains specifications for the dimensions, compressive strength, absorption, density, moisture content, and drying shrinkage of masonry units.

ASTM C140 (Standard Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Concrete Masonry Units and Related Units) and ASTM C426 (Standard Test Method for Linear Drying Shrinkage of Concrete Masonry Units) are the test methods used to evaluate concrete masonry units for C90 compliance. C140 covers the sampling and testing of CMU for dimensions, compressive strength, absorption, unit weight (density), and moisture content. C426 covers a standardized procedure for determining the linear drying shrinkage of CMU under specified accelerated drying conditions.

Therefore, compliance with ASTM C90 is merely a letter from the testing laboratory stating the CMUs passed all the tests performed under ASTM C140 and ASTM C426 test methods.
